If the party just naturally seems to end up at your house, consider it a compliment to your skills at making people feel welcome and comfortable. Doing that just seems to come naturally to some people. And that’s a good thing. What may not be so painless is the cost of entertaining — both in dollars and cents, as well as in planning, execution, time and energy. You know you love it, though, so here are some tips to make it easy on your budget, and easy on your psyche. Follow this advice, and you’ll always be ready.

1. Pantry Essentials

You’ll save yourself time, money and stress if you always keep your pantry stocked with a few, essential food items. These foods are very versatile and can be used in numerous hors d’oeuvres and party dish favorites. Next time you run to the grocery store pick up some or all of these: jars of olives, several varieties of salsa – green, red, and something exotic like mango, queso dip, apricot jam, green chili jelly, pitted dates, soy sauce, water chestnuts, tins of smoked clams or oysters, baby shrimp, and real bacon bits.
